The Delhi High Court on Thursday closed the hearing of a plea that sought action against former Delhi Law Minister Jitender Singh Tomar for enrolling as an advocate on the basis of a “false and bogus” graduation degree.
Cops probing matter
Justice Indermeet Kaur disposed of the plea on the grounds that the Delhi Police were already investigating the matter, and that the Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Council of India (BCI) had also been apprised of the matter. The BCI had recently ordered for the degrees of all lawyers to be verified on the basis of directions from the Supreme Court.
The court allowed Mr. Tomar’s plea seeking to transfer the inquiry related to his degree to the BCI after it was informed that the tenure of the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD) had ended, thus, delaying the ongoing probe.
The order on Thursday came on Mr. Tomar’s petition asking for the plea filed by advocate Santosh Kumar Sharma to be closed as he was already facing prosecution in a criminal case on the same issue.
In his plea, Mr. Sharma had claimed that Mr. Tomar submitted a “fake and bogus” under-graduate degree in Science from Avadh University to enrol in the Bishwanath Singh Institute of Legal Studies College (BSILS), Munger (Bihar), where he had purportedly studied LLB. He was enrolled as a lawyer by the BCD on the basis of a law degree from this college.
