‘Reservation can empower women’

February 02, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Supporting women’s reservation in Parliament, BJP MP Meenakshi Lekhi said on Monday that reservation can be of a way of “empowering women”.

Speaking at a panel discussion on ‘Empowering Women through Skills and Economic Independence’ at Delhi University’s Kamla Nehru College, she said: “I think reservation for women, who do not tow the line men demarcate for them, is my way of empowering women. There is need for 33 per cent reservation...”

Also present were Premier of Ontario Kathleen Wynne, Sri Lankan Minister Chandrani Bandara Jayasinghe and Canada High Commissioner to India Nadir Patel.

Ms. Wayne said: “Since we have more women in politics in Canada, women issues are discussed more. Issues that are traditionally called women issues, but are actually human issues, are discussed like sexual assault and violence at work place. We are currently working on a policy to deal with the wage gap.”
