: Members of the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday demanded strict punishment for the accused in the rape of a four-year-old girl in Delhi.

The issue was raised by Kanimozhi (DMK) and Jaya Bhaduri Bachchan (SP), who said the victim was hospitalised with grievous injuries. “This is not the only incident (of rape of a girl child) that happened in the country... we are not very sensitive to such acts,” Kanimozhi said. She further said “we need stricter laws” to deal with such cases.

Bachchan said she had been seeking a discussion on such incidents for the last couple of sessions but her requests had not been adhered to.

“We discuss all kinds of atrocities but not those concerning women,” she said.

Deputy Chairman P. J. Kurien said, “Ensure that stringent action is taken.” -PTI
