PWD to light up dark spots in Delhi

July 27, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:34 am IST - NEW DELHI:

The Public Works Department will take up the task of lighting up areas identified as dark spots in East and North Delhi over the coming days in order to ensure the safety of women.

A senior official said the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) and the East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) had recently given No Objection Certificates (NOCs) to the department to start the process in areas lying in its jurisdiction. The South Delhi Municipal Corporation is yet to give the go-ahead.

According to the department, 7,340 dark spots will be lit up with as many LED lights in NDMC area for which the PWD will install 3,686 new poles. In the EDMC areas, 124 such spots had been identified where LED lights will be installed on 82 new poles.

“The Delhi government has set aside Rs. 20 crore for lighting up dark spots in NDMC area while such spots which fall under the jurisdiction of EDMC will be lit up at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. In the next seven-eight days, both projects will be completed,” the official said.

In October, the Kejriwal government had passed a proposal to light up dark spots across the city. The PWD had sought an additional Rs. 150 crore for street lights in the AAP government’s second annual budget announced earlier this year.
