With the DU student union polls getting over last week and the university still defaced with posters and pamphlets, the National Green Tribunal on Wednesday issued notice to the Centre, the Ministry of Environment & Forests and the Delhi University on the huge amount of paper being wasted in campaigning.
The Tribunal also issued notices to the University Grants Commission and the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) on a petition filed by a first-year law student Nithin Chandran.
Chandran had moved the Tribunal highlighting the gross misuse of paper during the DUSU elections in making posters, cards, pamphlets, etc, in favour of contesting candidates.
“Every year in DUSU election and other student bodies election, the quantity of paper wasted in canvassing and campaigning is huge and the damage therein to the environment is irreparable...Neither is there any accountability for usage of paper nor is there any norm or procedure for re-cycling of this waste paper,” the plea said.
Chandran relied on a Supreme Court order asking universities to implement the recommendations of the JM Lyngdoh committee in their student union elections suggesting use of handmade posters in elections.
