Some of the pocket-friendly hotels and guesthouses of Paharganj in Central Delhi have become the target of the local civic body’s demolition drive against unauthorised construction.

Acting on instructions from the High Court, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation has demolished several guesthouses and will continue to crackdown on illegal buildings in the area, which is a favourite with tourists.

North Corporation Commissioner Pravin Kumar Gupta said on Friday: “We have demolished nine guesthouses, one is partly demolished and one is yet to be demolished. According to a PIL, there were 11 properties with illegal construction.”

Mr. Gupta added that about 300 FIRs had been registered against unauthorised constructions across North Delhi over the last month. Action against the guesthouses will be completed in a few days, said the Commissioner. Some guesthouses may be given sealing notices, added an official.

The North Corporation would be submitting a report about the action taken to the High Court on December 12.
