HC notice on PIL for safety norms

September 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 28, 2016 03:02 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

A public interest litigation moved in the Delhi High Court has raised the issue of installation of electric poles in the Capital without following safety norms and alleged the “callous attitude” of the authorities concerned was posing a threat to the lives of people and animals.

The writ petition, filed by non-government organisation, Common Cause, has sought directions to the Delhi government authorities to take all safety measures in order to avoid death of human beings and animals. It said the agencies concerned had ignored the recommendations of various expert committees to replace overhead lines with underground cables.

The High Court’s Division Bench, comprising Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice Jayant Nath, on Wednesday issued notices to the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission and power discoms, asking them to file their response by November 4.

The petition, filed through lawyer Meera Bhatia, sought to safeguard the right to life guaranteed under Article 21 of the Constitution.
