A former Border Security Force (BSF) officer shot dead a robber and injured his accomplice with his licensed pistol when they allegedly tried to rob him at gunpoint in outer Delhi’s Shahbad Dairy on Tuesday night.
Ramesh Chander fought the robbers, following which one of them pulled out a pistol and fired at him.
“He had a small window of opportunity due to the misfire and he used that opportunity to pull out his pistol and shoot at them,” said DCP (Outer) Vikramjit Singh.
The police said no case will be registered against him since he clearly acted in self-defence. However, his licensed pistol has been seized for examination. An FIR has been registered against the robbers and efforts are being made to identify them. Mr. Chander, who works as security officer with a construction company in north-west Delhi, was on the way to his Majra Dabas home when he was intercepted on Rohtak Road.
Trained
The accused allegedly followed his scooter for several kilometres before intercepting him at gunpoint. One of them asked him for his wallet and mobile phone, and even fired a warning shot in the air. Trained to take on at least two men, Mr. Chander refused to hand over the valuables.
“The robbers snatched his wallet and fired at him. The bullet missed him, giving him enough time to pull out his own pistol,” said the police.
He threatened the robbers into submission, but was forced to shoot when they tried to snatch his weapon. One bullet hit a robber in the chest, the other, though injured, fled the spot. The victim then called the police, who rushed the first robber to a hospital, where he was declared brought dead.
