DUSU backs feedback system

May 31, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:33 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Even as Delhi University teachers have strongly opposed the University Grants Commission’s (UGC) latest gazette notification that seeks student feedback to determine a teacher’s promotion through Academic Performance Indicators (API), the DU students’ association has come out in its support.

Support

Supporting the notification, the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), led by RSS student wing Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, demanded that “the University apply it in all its totality”.

“DUSU welcomes the introduction of the provision of student feedback system in all universities through the UGC Gazette Notification 2016, which will enable students to give their feedback regarding the teachers, which will also be counted towards their academic profile,” DUSU president Satender Awana said.

Problem

However, DU teachers are strictly against the notification.

Explaining the problem, a DU teacher, who is also a part of the protests, said: “If you have to decide a teacher’s appraisal on the basis of what students have to say, it will not be a very fair criteria. Students might give a bad feedback about a teacher who is academically very good, but they are unable to understand him/her. That way, the teacher will lose out during the appraisals.”
