Campaign on awareness about surrogacy

October 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:36 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Doctors with the Indian Society for Third Party Assisted Reproduction (INSTAR) organised a series of nukkad nataks in order to create ing awareness about surrogacy.

The publicity programmes were organised on Saturday at Saket, Qutub Minar, Lado Sarai and Mehrauli market to spread awareness about surrogacy. These nataks will be held in various parts of the city this week.

“On Sunday, the nukkad natak is scheduled to be held at Connaught Place Raahagiri, India Gate, Jantar Mantar, Bangla Sahib Gurdwara. On other days, the show will travel to Akshardham, Noida, Laxmi Nagar and Krishna Nagar. It will culminate at the INSTAR annual conference organised on October 11 at the India Habitat Centre,” said the organisers.

Doctors organising the event said every individual has the right to have a family. With the WHO stating that infertility is on a rise, “talking about surrogacy is the need of the hour”.

Meanwhile, doctors also noted that they are not happy with the Assisted Reproductive Technology Bill, recently been made public.

“It it is completely contrary to public wish and ignores the needs of society. It is discriminatory and not reasonable to close doors for foreign surrogacy,” noted doctors.

Radhika Thapar Bahl, a lawyer specialising in fertility and medico-legal aspects including surrogacy, noted: “Today’s world is realising the need of fertility treatments, including surrogacy. Intervention of law is to protect the interest of parties and children born by compensated surrogacy in such a way that it addresses legalities and specifies the rights and duties of parties clearly.”

Stating that there has been great advancement in the field of infertility and third party reproduction processes like egg donation, surrogacy and sperm donation in the treatment process, INSTAR member Aastha Gupta said: “This is also a huge social cause and our endeavour is to encourage and promote each and every human being to feel the joy of parenthood.”
