In a fit of rage upon being hit by a cricket ball, a fielder fatally struck a 17-year-old friend on the head with a bat in South-West Delhi’s Sagarpur.

On seeing his friend fall unconscious, the accused immediately rushed the victim to a hospital, but in vain.

Booked for culpable homicide

Police probe has found that the 19-year-old accused did not intend to kill the minor. Instead of registering a case of murder, the police have booked him for culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Shivam, was a Class X student and lived with his parents in Dashrath Puri. His parents had sent him to their hometown in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, a few months ago over fears about him falling into bad company. Shivam had returned to Delhi a few days ago to spend his vacations with his parents.

Childhood friends

Shivam and Akash were childhood friends and classmates. On Wednesday evening, Akash and some local youths asked Shivam to join them for a game of cricket at the local Budhdha Jayanti Park.

“The incident took place while Shivam was batting. Their friend Ajit bowled to Shivam, who struck the ball towards Akash, who was fielding nearby,” said Surender Kumar, DCP (South-West).

Akash was unable to stop the ball and it hit him on the shoulder. He screamed in pain before bursting into tears. Seeing Akash hurt, Shivam and the others rushed towards him.

“All of a sudden, Akash stood up, picked up a spare bat lying nearby and struck Shivam on the head, who collapsed immediately,” added Mr. Kumar.

The youth, including the accused, immediately rushed Shivam to a hospital, but he was declared brought dead.

The hospital authorities informed the police and Akash was arrested. His parents defended him saying he did not mean to kill Shivam.

“Akash and Shivam were best friends. He was inconsolable after realising that Shivam was dead,” said his mother.

However, Jagdish, the victim’s father who does odd jobs for a living, said: “Had my wife or I been at home that day, we would have never have allowed Shivam to play with those youths.”
