A man allegedly posing as a lawyer at the Dwarka court was arrested after of his “clients” submitted a written complaint alleging that the accused, Ajitkar, had taken ₹50,000 from him.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (South-West) Surender Kumar said a case of cheating had been registered at the Dwarka (south) police station.
The complainant told the police that he was looking for a lawyer to represent his cousin at the Dwarka court when he saw Ajitkar ‘fighting’ a case. He was further impressed when the accused told him that he was an expert in criminal cases.
“He took ₹50,000 from me and said he would charge another ₹50,000 after the case was settled. I paid him in cash,” the victim told the police.
While the complainant did not mention what case his cousin was fighting, he told the police that their priority was to get the bail of the other party cancelled, which Ajitkar promised.
However, when he reached the court on Saturday, he saw Ajitkar surrounded by lawyers, including bar council members, all of whom claimed that he was duping people.
Escaped scrutiny
It is, however, not clear how he fought cases without being qualified. Sources said it is unclear how the court staff failed to carry out proper scrutiny.
Ajitkar, who was later asked by the police to submit documents to prove that he was a lawyer, failed to do so. He also said that he would wear a black coat which was often enough to convince gullible targets.
