GAIL pipeline: plea to pay monthly rentals to farmers

July 01, 2014 12:50 pm | Updated 12:50 pm IST - Tirupur:

The All India Kissan Sabha district president, P. Mohan, has said that monthly rentals should be paid to farmers for laying pipelines through their lands by GAIL to transport natural gas.

Officials concerned should come up with an alternative concept to execute the project in the wake of pipeline tragedy in Andhra Pradesh.

“One cannot totally discard technology and hence, it is advisable to think of precautions as part of the alternative concept to lay the pipelines through farm lands itself without looking at alternative routes or abandon the project,” Mr. Mohan said.

Some of the suggestions that Mr. Mohan had put forward included posting trained people as supervisors to identify leaks.

“The supervisors can be selected from among the agrarian community so that it could give additional income to the farmers,” he said.
