The Coimbatore Corporation on Sunday borrowed water cannons from the Rapid Action Force to spray effective microorganism solution on waste dumped at its Vellalore dump yard.

According to sources, the civic body engaged two cannons to spray 20,000 litres of EM solution so as to fasten the process of degradation of wet waste.

The sources said that it was the first in the series of steps the civic body had planned to control fly menace and odour from the Vellalore yard.

In the days to come, the civic body would engage a non-government organisation to supply the effective microorganism solution and also spray the mixture.

The move comes even as the Corporation is spraying pesticides to control flies outside the yard.

But residents in and around the yard said that they had not seen any visible change. Flies continued to torment them and so did the odour from the yard. In fact, in the last two days the fly menace had only worsened.

They said that the Corporation’s efforts would go futile unless the civic body segregated the waste.

At present, the civic body sprayed the solution on mixed waste, which would only kill bacterial activity.

If the incoming waste was segregated half the problem would be solved, the residents said.
