The District Industries Centre (DIC) here has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with more than 1,000 Micro, Small and Medium-Scale Enterprises (MSMEs) to attract investments by these units.

According to data available with the DIC, it has entered into an agreement with 1,806 units that will bring in Rs. 3,184 crore investment. This includes 536 units by women entrepreneurs. Of the 1,806 units, 1,471 are in the manufacturing sector and 335 in the service sector. The investment by manufacturing units will be Rs. 2,636 crore and that by the service enterprises will be Rs. 548 crore.

An official of the DIC said that this is expected to be the highest investment by MSMEs in a district in the State. The DICs in every district have been conducting camps and road shows to enter into agreements with the MSMEs for attracting investment and extending Government support to the units through different schemes.

J. James, president of Tamil Nadu Association of Cottage and Tiny Enterprises, said that most of these agreements are by small and medium-scale industries. “We (the micro units) are struggling to protect the investments we have made. We need Government support for sustaining operations,” he said.

S. Ravi Kumar, president of Coimbatore and Tirupur Districts Micro and Cottage Entrepreneurs Association, said that apart from the investment of Rs. 3,000 crore in Coimbatore by small and medium-scale enterprises, if there are investments by multi-national and large-scale industries, it will give hope to the micro units for more job orders.
