In about six months, seven chain snatching incidents were reported in Sai Baba Colony, Bharathi Park and nearby areas. While the police were clueless on the persons involved in the incidents, a couple of months ago, the CCTV footage from the house of Manoharan in the Colony helped identify the accused.

“The accused were arrested and inquiry revealed that they were involved in 14 such incidents in the city,” Inspector N. Manivarman said and added that no such case had been reported since then.

The Sai Baba Colony police and members of Bharathi Park Ladies Association organised a meeting a few weeks ago to sensitise residents to the importance of bringing their residential area under CCTV surveillance.

With help of sponsors, the first set of 10 CCTV cameras were installed on Alagesan Road, from Mettupalayam Road to Thadagam Road, and a police outpost was constructed opposite the BSNL office in Sai Baba Colony.

The outpost and CCTV vigil was inaugurated by City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan on Thursday. Deputy Commissioner of Police R.V. Ramya Bharathi was also present.
