Plectrurus perrotetii, also known as the Nilgiri burrowing snake or Perrotet’s shieldtail snake, rescued from a farm at Vadavalli in the city on Wednesday.

A group of nature enthusiasts on Tuesday night rescued a 16-inch Plectrurus perrotetii, also known as the Nilgiri burrowing snake or Perrotet’s shieldtail snake, from a farm at Vadavalli.

K. Santhosh, who headed the rescue group, said that the male snake was found in the garden of the farm house at Mullai Nagar near Vadavalli.

According to Mr. Santhosh, the snake is primarily sighted during rainy season and night in high altitude places like the Nilgiris.

The snake, which spends most of the time underground, primarily feeds on earthworms.

Mr. Santhosh said that this was the first Plectrurus perrotetii spotted in a low altitude place in Coimbatore.

The snake was later released in forest area near Siruvani.
