Two recipes - of Butter Basil Mushroom Prawn and Roasted Broccoli Fritters - won out of 85 entries at the recently concluded recipe contest organised by That’s Y Food.

The winners, Suman Rao and Amber Dogra, not only won exciting prizes, but also experienced the thrill of seeing their dishes become a part of the restaurant’s menu!

Suman Rao is 59 years old but she sounds not older than one of her tuition students! Her exuberance and excitement jumps off the telephone wires as she accepts our congratulations. When she saw the announcement inviting recipes for a competition, she decided to jump right in. She entered a recipe for roasted broccoli fritters and won! “I made it like a cutlet with mashed boiled potato and broccoli and instead of coating the cutlet with bread crumbs like one normally does, I used crumbled roasted papad,” she said. “

Almost-40 Amber Dogra entered a Butter Basil Mushroom Prawn recipe for the Non-vegetarian section and she won, hands down.

Amber is from Deolali and a fauji wife. “My children insisted I enter. I was reluctant, but my mother clinched the matter. When I told her about the contest, she told me, ‘Get up and make something nice!’ And here I am. My family is very fond of mushrooms; so I incorporated the mushrooms and basil into a basic butter prawn recipe”.

Ranjana Singhal, owner of That’s Y Food, whose brainchild the recipe contest was said she was hoping to unearth the talents of home cooks in the city. “We received 85 entries. Some were quite ordinary and missed the wow factor and a few others seemed to be copy-paste efforts. But we shortlisted 10 possibilities of which six were invited to demonstrate to our chefs in our restaurant kitchen.”

The ladies will have the privilege of having the name of the dish they created along with their photographs printed on the tent cards kept on each table at That’s Y Food.

“We informed the winners that we would take a few liberties with their recipes, as we would have to modify them for bulk cooking. They were fine with that.”

Suman and Amber have won a holiday package to Malaysia sponsored by GT Travels and silver jewellery from Naira Jewellers.
