Man's best friend

BEEP! BEEP! My alarm goes off. Immediately, my dog Snoopy runs into my room and begins to lick every part of my face.

Ugh. His breath doesn’t smell too good.

I get up, thinking about how lucky I am to have such a cute and loving dog until I notice that he’s completely ransacked my room — notebooks strewn here, football lying there — it’s a complete mess. I groan in frustration.

This anecdote is perfectly true. In fact, it nearly sums up most relationships between dogs and their owners. One minute you’re cuddling happily, the next, you’re at loggerheads. So why are they called ‘Man’s Best Friend’?

Well, the answer is quite simple. Dogs reward you in ways that some don’t understand. Loyalty. Love. No matter how much they trouble you, they are your best friend, and hence the saying ‘Dogs are man’s best friend’.
