Shibani Kashyap

Shibani Kashyap

Well known for the signature tune of the All India Radio’s FM channel and Amul India, Shibani Kashyap has paired up with Mika Singh for the first time for a Punjabi track. “Soneya”. Her songs like “Sajna Aaa Bhi Ja” from the film “Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II” have become popular and she has also anchored a singer hunt show while giving voice to the title song for a Pakistani serial “Mohabbat Jai Bhar Mein”.

She was recently in Capital to promote her new album. Excerpts from an interview:

Rumours are abound that you always use an electronic device with your voice?

Yes, I have mixed my voice with an electronic device called Vocoder. And perhaps I am the first singer to undertake such type of experiment. It was just a new innovation. I always wanted to do something new and so this mixing.

How do you manage to use this device at the time of live performances?

No question of mixing at the time of live performances.

Recording room and live performances are completely different things. It was just an experiment to mix up my voice with that device.

What is the genre of the song for which you have teamed up with Mika possibly for the first time?

Yes we have first time worked together although I have known Mika for a long time but this time we finally got to sing together. And this is my first Punjabi folk which is in the genre of Indipop. I want to revive the genre of Indipop here.

You have also sung some Sufi tracks...

Yes, I have sung. Actually I have been trained in Kirana gharana. Also I was a member of the band Black Slade in Delhi. Since a child, I started to practise. From my childhood I had the advantage of a family environment in which singing was encouraged.

Is it true that you have started acting also? Yes, I have a guest appearance in a movie “Main Osama” directed by Faisal Saif. It will also be my first movie for which I will be composing the music. So in this movie I compose as well as act.
