B. Vaidyanathan’s neraval expertise came through in his concert for Nada Bharati.

HYDERABAD: SSS Bharati and Nada Bharati organised a vocal concert of B.Vaidyanathan at Swathi Hall, D.D. Colony. Vaidyanathan hails from a family of musicians and he got his training from his father and he’s known to possess vast repertoire and also known for neraval presentation. On this occasion he had Jyothi Vaidyanathan as accompanying vocalist. Komanduri Sowrirajan on violin and Srinivasa Gopalan on mridangam lent support.

Vaidyanathan opened his concert with a prayer, Uma Maheshwara Sthothram set in raga Khamas and followed it with a rare number Chinni Krishna Dasu’s swarajathi Sambasiva Enave in fast tempo. Later he rendered Thyagaraja’s Nada Thanumanisam in Chitharanjani, Adi talam with swarakalpana at the line Sadyojhaata.

The next number was of that of Dikshitar – Ramanatham Bajeham in a rare raga Kaasiraamakriya. This was vilambakala kriti presented with neraval and swarakalpana in two speeds.

Paraathpara of Papanasam Sivan in Vachaspathi that Vaidyanathan chose, was breezy number, incorporating neraval and swarakalpana that took considerable space. Later he sang a rare composition of Dikshitar , Ekambra Naatham in Gamakapriya ragam, which is about Ekambreshwara of Kanchi. This being vilamba kala kirtana the gist of devotional element could be absorbed. The neraval he presented at the line Panchaakshara Mantra Swaroopam; Prasanna Roope accentuated sahitya appeal. The swarakalana was presented in two speeds. He then sang, as part of Chidambara kshetram, the composition Idad Padam Thooki Aadum of Papanasam Sivan in Kamas. The Charanam was set to Tisra gathi.‘Kaana Vendamo’

The main item of the concert was Akshyalinga Vibho in Shankarabharanam of Dikshitar. This was set to Misrachapu talam. He gave detailed picture of the raga and the kirtana rendition was clear in projecting its sahitya, that reaveal the beauty of the Lord. Neravu and Swarakalpana he presented projected his creative skills. Rajan on violin made the raga Sakarabharanam sound richer. Srinivasa Gopalan on the mridangam was at his best. His tani avartanam in misrachapu talam with half space was superb.

Later part of the concert was a compendium of lighter compositions like swamy Suranandaji’s Gangadeeshwaram Shankaram in Sindubhairavi, Jayendra Saraswathi’s composition on his Guru Karunarasapoorna sudhapthe in Yamunakalyani and a sloka from Siva’s ‘Mangalastakam’ in raga Surati.
