The dreams we hold as a child don’t always have to be just dreams. The idea of using raw material to manufacture products and its environmental impact always interested me. So, I decided to continue studying further after my undergraduate studies and pursue master’s in Chemical Engineering. It did not take me long to prepare a list of universities and decide to apply for the University of Florida (UF). What amazed me was how well it fit into most of my requirements. The department of chemical engineering at UF is ranked amongst the top 50 in the U.S. It has exceptional faculty and resources and is involved in some great research work.
I can never forget the adrenaline rush I got when I landed in Gainesville, got my Gator1 card and did the Gator chomp. The best part of my study was the diversity I came across in terms of ideas, and I learnt a lot about efficient management of time and money. The department really helped me explore my options and focus on what interested me the most. The icing on the cake was definitely the co-op opportunity I received with the R&D department of a leading chemical company. It really boosted my experience in an industrial environment and let me explore what I love doing further. Equipped with the latest technology and instrumentation, I felt like a kid who was given a new toy to experiment on, and this not only excited me, but also made me aim higher.
Part-time jobsUF has ample opportunities for students in terms of part-time jobs. It also has one of the best career resource centres in the nation that constantly drives students towards a successful path. The networking opportunities provided by the department and the university in the form of social events, workshops and info sessions are a goldmine.
The best part about Gainesville is its cheerful weather, with the sun shining on you almost all year long. Winters are never too cold, which saves you the trouble of wearing too many layers of clothing. The city also happens to be one of the most student-friendly places I’ve ever been to. The crowd is young and vibrant, and the facilities, ranging from grocery to transportation, are a boon to students compared to most other cities. Luckily, Gainesville also happens to be one of the least expensive areas in the U.S making it ideal for grad life. There are several restaurants students can go to for dining. The entire “GO Gators” spirit will never cease to keep you pumped up and the football fever is amazing!
And here’s the best part: home to the famous Universal Studios, Harry Potter world and tons of other amusement parks, Orlando is hardly two hours from Gainesville. Sunshine State also promises you some of the best beaches, parties, sea food and oranges you’ll ever see. Trust me, you’ll never run out of places to visit or things to do in Florida.
