Residents of Nawab Habibullah Nagar, Mudichur, are concerned over the lack of civic amenities in the area. The four streets, found in a radius of two kilometres, off Mudichur Road, do not have proper roads, provision for drinking water and stormwater drains.

Residents say representations were made to the Mudichur village panchayat and petitions sent to the Kancheepuram district Collectorate, assistant director, village panchayat, project director, Kancheepuram district Collectorate, assistant director (audit), Kancheepuram district Collectorate and the CM’s Cell.

“A resolution was passed to re-lay tar roads on Yamuna Street, Narmada Street, Thamirabarani Street and Palar Street at the Village Gram meeting held this August. But, till date, no action has been taken,” residents pointed out.

The layout plan for the locality was sanctioned in 1993. As per the plan, under the Open Space Reserve, 64 cents were earmarked for a park and the park layout was approved by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA). However, the land earmarked for the park is overgrown with bushes, they added. After repeated representations, the authorities concerned, assistant director and Administration Block Development Office, Kancheepuram Collectorate have given project reports, requesting CMDA for grant of funds regarding development of the park, they added.

“The roads in the locality have not been re-laid for over a decade and they are full of potholes. Even a short spell of rain is enough to flood the streets. Also, due to lack of stormwater drains, rainwater stagnates for several days on the roads and in vacant plots, posing a health hazard,” the residents said. The members also requested the panchayat to provide potable drinking water. At present, the water supplied by the panchayat is unfit for consumption, they said.

When contacted, the Kancheepuram Collectorate officials said they will take action at the earliest to alleviate the woes of residents.
