Poor traffic regulation by the J.J. Nagar police in Mogappair is affecting pedestrians. They have to sprint and dodge vehicles while crossing the intersection of Ambattur Industrial Estate Main Road and Bazaar Road in Collector Nagar. Pedestrians want the civic officials to construct a footover bridge (FOB) with escalators to enable them to cross the intersection safely. With the footpaths and part of the road space encroached upon by hawkers and illegally parked vehicles, pedestrians have no option but walk in the middle of the road, settling themselves up for accidents.

“During the rush hour, especially in the evening, the stretch is congested with parked vehicles especially private cabs. Further, many motorists jump the signal before pedestrians could cross the junction,” said V. Rajagopal, president of Anna Nagar West Extension Phase – II Residents Welfare Association.

The 60-feet Bazaar Road is the gateway for more than two dozen street lanes including Vinakar Koil street, Gandhi street, Ambedkar street and Anna street to localities such as Anna Nagar, Thirumangalam, Padi, Kolathur and the Poonamallee High (PH) Road via the Ambattur Estate Road.

Further, the stretch also connects Nolambur and Mogappair East with the busy Ambattur Estate Road. The stretch is lined with commercial establishments and is extremely busy.

Above all, the stretch is an important route for 23 bus services that operate from the bus terminus in Mogappair East and West and go to places like Broadway, T.Nagar, Tambaram, Adyar, Saidapet and Red Hills.

However, lack of traffic regulation, including creation of no parking zones along the road, have made the lives of pedestrians difficult.

Interestingly, Bazaar Road has a police booth manned by the J.J. Nagar police team at the point where it intersects Ambattur Estate Road.
