For a week now, pedestrians and motorists are relieved while using First Avenue Road in Nolambur as a row of steel barricades are in place to serve as a median. This will prevent motorists from suddenly changing lanes taking other motorists by surprise.
With a thickly populated neighbourhood and many commercial establishments around in the vicinity, the 60-feet-road is a bustling stretch. The road is also a main bus route as the west Mogappair terminus is close by.
For motorists, the First Avenue Road in Nolambur is a short route to reach Anna Nagar and Tirumangalam from Ambattur, Mannurpet, Thirumullavoyal, J.J. Nagar and Maduravoyal. Also, motorists from the interior parts of Mogappair East, Ambattur, Padi, Korattur, Anna Nagar West use the stretch to reach places like Maduravoyal, Porur and Tambaram via Chennai Bypass Road.
“Though a temporary measure, the barricades enabled traffic discipline. With traffic policemen at important points, pedestrians find it easy to cross the road,” said S. Pushpalatha, a resident of Nolambur. Since last fortnight, a police booth is in place at the end of First Avenue Road.
As this road links the western part of the city with Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur via Chennai Bypass, container lorries frequent the stretch.
“The stretch is an important transit point to the city from its western side. So, it is necessary to strengthen surveillance here,” said a police official.
