During a group study, three students decided to take their passion for photography to the next level — that is, turn it into a profession.
Following this, Nimalan Arooran, Narayanaswamy Subbaraman and Hindustani Ankit started Arkscope, through which they offer photography, videography, design and printing services.
They are third-year students of journalism at Madras Christian College and devote time to their start-up after college hours. They could not invest in photography equipment, and took them on rent.
An empty room at the house of Nimalan’s sister’s became the trio’s first workspace.
“We are making profits with the venture, but we continue to hire equipment, which include helicams and drone cameras,” says Narayanaswamy, adding they are planning to move into a bigger studio in Vadapalani soon.
Juggling college and Arkscope was their next big challenge. “Initially, we missed many classes as a lot of work had to be done. But as we are evening college students, we manage to shoot weddings in the morning and other events during weekends,” says Narayanaswamy, who specialises in videography.
A wall gallery is Arkscope’s signature work, in which a particular wall of a client’s house is painted and adorned with a mix of photographs and artworks.
“We try to restore memorable moments from the past through photo frames, family trees and photographs from family shoots,” says Narayanaswamy. The friends also create wedding teasers and short films instead of the conventional wedding videography. Arkscope has taken up 10 marriage shoots, a few industrial and social projects and are currently working on food portfolios for two theme restaurants in the city.
