Safety of women and young girls is a major concern for society. V.M. Vinu’s new film, Marupadi , tries to address that issue. Rahman and Bhama star in the lead in the film, which is being shot in Kolkata, Kannur and Wayanad.

“Rahman plays a banker, Eby, while Bhama is his wife, Sara, a lawyer. Sara grew up in an orphanage. Baby Nayanthara is enacting the role of their daughter, around whom the plot of Marupadi evolves,” says Vinu, the director of films such as Balettan , Vesham and Makante Achan .

Eby and family lead a happy life until one incident changes everything. “How a tragedy affects a family and how they react to it is what the film is all about. Eby and Sara are forced to take some drastic measures,” the director elaborates. Santosh Keezhattoor also plays an important role in the film, as a close friend of Eby’s. Tessa stars as his wife.

Marupadi ’s script is by Julaina Ashraf. “If you are the mother of a teenaged girl, you have every reason to be worried these days. Being the mother of three girls, including a teenager, I know that feeling very well. So I had been thinking about writing a script based on this issue for quite some time. Then I read a report about an incident involving a woman and her daughter in Bihar. That is how Marupadi took off,” says the Kozhikode-born, Mangaluru-based Julaina.

The film is produced by her husband, Ashraf Bedi, under the banner of Bedi Motion Pictures. Marupadi ’s cast includes Bengali actor Sudip Mukherjee, Janarddanan, Devan, Sivaji Guruvayur, Srinda and Manju Pathrose. Venugopal is the cinematographer, while M. Jayachandran has set to music Rafeeq Ahamed’s lyrics.

Marupadi will reach cinemas in August.
