P. S. Ramnath, the director of Thirunaal , shot the film in all of 65 days. But that wasn’t the challenge; it was in convincing Jiiva and Nayantara to do the film in the first place. “It’s a thin story of a rowdy living in Kumbakonam. It’s an emotional subject with a light-hearted treatment. The most memorable moments have the lead pair pulling each other’s leg. Once I convinced them of the film’s potential, the shooting was a breeze.”
On the title of the film, Ramnath says that every individual aims to live life to the fullest. “But every day is a thirunaal , without us having to look for festival dates in our calendars.” But he says this is not a film with a message. “Jiiva plays a rowdy named Blade, and Nayantara, a school teacher. Their relationships begins on a sour note, but soon, there’s a turnaround. Srikanth Deva’s music has really lifted the film,” he says.
Ramnath says that Nayantara’s homely character is on the lines of her role in Ayya . “Jiiva has completely undergone an image change to slip into his character in every way. He has changed his looks, his body language, and his dialogue delivery.”
