A man has died after falling from a building site in London's Canary Wharf, Scotland Yard has said.

The victim, who was not thought to be a construction worker, plunged around 50 feet into a trench at the site in Bank Street in the financial district.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 9am on Tuesday morning, as many people in the area were returning to work after the Christmas and New Year break.

A London Fire Brigade spokesman said the incident occurred at the site of a building under construction.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 8.52am to Bank Street, Tower Hamlets to reports of a person fallen.

“We sent our Hazardous Area Response Team, an incident response officer and an ambulance crew to the scene.  “Sadly, the patient died at the scene.”

Scotland Yard said the victim was not a construction worker and his death was being treated as "unexplained".

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "The body of a man had been found after apparently falling into a deep trench at the location.

"He was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has not yet been recovered.

"He is not thought to have been a member of construction staff. It is not being treated as suspicious."
