Commuters were shaken after the roof of a double-decker bus was torn off by a bridge in Bournville, Birmingham.

The bus had the top completely ripped off as it traveled under a low railway bridge.

A paramedic who attended the scene said there were no injuries as there were no passengers on board the out-of-service National Express West Midlands bus.

The driver also escaped unscathed.

However, people travelling on the road who witnessed the incident described being "shaken" by the scene.

Amy Tunney wrote on Facebook: "So a bus just drove under Bournville Lane bridge and took the top clean off, only just stopped shaking, the bang was incredible.

"Thankfully driver was ok and no passengers on."

The bridge, which is near Cadbury World, bears a warning that it has a 10ft height limit.

A paramedic who attended the scene described the "unusual" end to his shift.

Ben Pallante tweeted: "Slightly different end to my shift tonight.

"We responded to reports of a bus vs bridge in south Birmingham, upon arrival a double decker bus had gone through a bridge, totally removing the upper deck and roof.

"Thankfully no customers were on board and the driver had no injuries."

It appears staff from Cadbury World attended the scene, as Mr Pallante thanked them, writing: "Thanks to the @WestMidsFire @CadburyUK & @WMPolice who attended very quickly and supported me in attending to the patient - Thanks all."

A fire crew which attended the scene tweeted: "Double decker v bridge. Bridge wins."
