For many a young priest, their first-ever wedding is a nervous occasion.

Fear of forgetting the couple's names or getting the liturgy wrong are bound to creep in.

The antics of the novice priest played by Rowan Atkinson, in Four Weddings and a Funeral, who, officiating at his first wedding, mispronounces the bride and groom's names, and accidentally speaks of the "Holy Goat" and the "Holy Spigot" must play on many a clergyman's mind.

But they can comfort themselves that things don't always go smoothly even for the most senior cleric in the church.

The Archbishop of Canterbury caused a moment of panic for one happy couple last Saturday after he dropped the bride's ring during the ceremony.

In the middle of marrying his director of communications Ailsa Anderson to journalist Simon Cole, Justin Welby remarked that he had been given only one ring.

In fact both rings had been placed on top of the order of service held in his hands by the groom's sons - but one had slipped from the Archbishop's grasp and rolled away.

It took a moment of frantic searching by the wedding party for the bride to locate it under a nearby chair so that the service could go on.

The new Mrs Anderson-Cole told the Sunday Telegraph: "Simon's two sons Adam and Tomek gave him away. Justin was officiating.

"They put the two wedding rings on the order of service for Justin and he looked down and said 'is there only one ring?'. And we said 'no, there's two' and we looked around for a little while, and saw it had rolled under a chair."

She added that the Archbishop "first of all thought it was Tomek's fault - but then admitted it was his".

The Archbishop had offered to marry the couple after they got engaged at Christmas, in part, she added, because "he wanted to make to a speech at the reception".

"It was absolutely gorgeous  - we couldn't have wished for a better day," she said. "It was a lovely warm speech. He's been so kind to us.

"It was just so beautiful, it was all candlelit. I cried all the way through the rehearsal," she added.

"My ring is firmly on my finger and hasn't come off since Saturday."

The ceremony is the first wedding conducted by the Archbishop since he married his daughter Katharine to Michael Roberts at Canterbury Cathedral in 2014.

The Anderson-Coles married by candlelight in front of a congregation of 70 in the crypt at Lambeth Palace, a 14th century part of the building which is now used as a chapel.

Mrs Anderson-Cole is the former press secretary to the Queen and has worked at Lambeth Palace since 2013. Her new husband is a veteran journalist and TV executive who has worked at ITN and Sky.

Both have children from previous relationships. Mrs Anderson-Cole's son Henry, 12, gave her away, and her daughter Charlotte, 7, was a bridesmaid.

Mr Anderson-Cole's adult sons Tomek, 25, an estate agent, and Adam, 27, a cameraman for Sky News, were his best men.

The couple plan to move in together to the groom's house in Buckinghamshire, and are on a "mini-moon" in Hampshire this weekend.

A separate spokeswoman for the Archbishop said Lambeth Palace would not comment since the wedding was a private event.
