Vince Cable, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has released a video on Twitter to entice potential voters to watch their upcoming party political broadcast.

However, it appears to have backfired, as social media users have mocked the the 74-year-old for the "cringe" video, in which he puts on a wide-brimmed hat and winks at his audience.

Mr Cable attracted a large reaction for the video, described as "cringe" and "creepy", with others sending in gifs and films of their own:

People were critical of the video, with one Twitter user writing: "Sorry LibDems. This is lame."

Another asked: "What in god's name is this? Someone please, make the cringe go away!!"

Earlier in the day, former leader Tim Farron also appeared to attempt to appeal to young people, quoting Jay Z in his speech at the Liberal Democrat conference.

He said that the Liberal Democrats have a niche stance on Brexit, and that "we have 99 problems but the niche ain't one".

Mr Farron also described himself as "the party's leading authority on gangster rap".
