A train has caught fire on Thursday morning causing significant disruption to commuters.

The empty passenger train went up in flames near Exeter St Davids in Devon.

Network Rail said there would be significant disruption while the fire is tackled and the train removed from the tracks.

Safety checks will also have to be carried out before the line can be reopened.

It is not known how the fire started, and there are no reported injuries at this stage.

A spokesman said: “The fire next to the track between Exeter St Davids and Tiverton Parkway has been dealt with, allowing lines to reopen.

"Whilst services recover, trains between these stations may be delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised.

"Disruption is expected until 7.45am.”
