Madonna has applied to adopt four-year-old twins called Stella and Esther from Malawi, reports have claimed.
No further details regarding the identities of the children were released. But today, reports suggested she has filed to adopt two girls, who have allegedly been staying in an orphanage for two years.
The singer has so far denied claims that she is interested in adoption, telling US magazine People that she is in Malawi to check on a children's hospital.
"The rumours of an adoption process are untrue," she said. "I am in Malawi to check on the children's hospital in Blantyre and my other work with Raising Malawi and then heading home."
But on Thursday, government officials insisted that Madonna had filed documentation and said a judge would make a decision on her request soon.
Mlenga Mvula, the judiciary spokesman, said: "We have the file, we have everything, we have all the documentation and the matter will be determined by the judge soon. If the court grants her an adoption order, she will have the twins this time around."
Claiming Madonna was trying to deliberately keep the details under wraps, he added: "We have no time to be lying to the general public when they know the truth of the matter."
Lucy Bandazi, a spokesman for the Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare, added to MailOnline, which disclosed the alleged names: "Madonna has lodged an application with the High Court to adopt two girls. They are aged four years old.
"All the necessary paperwork is before the High Court and they will make the ultimate decision if the adoption can go ahead."
The Daily Telegraph has contacted representatives for Madonna for comment but has not yet received a reply.
