The Queen accompanied her nephew, David Armstrong-Jones, to church near her Sandringham Estate today, just days after his father, Lord Snowdon, died.

Braving wet and cold conditions, the royal party attended the morning service at St Mary the Virgin church in the village of Flitcham, Norfolk.

The Second Earl of Snowdon, whose father's death was confirmed on Friday, was accompanied by his wife Serena, who wore a knee length black coat and black pillbox hat.

Sheltered from the rain by an umbrella, the Queen wore a double breasted purple coat and matching hat.

The 95-year-old Duke of Edinburgh was also in attendance at the service in the small village church.

Lord Snowdon, the celebrity photographer, who was married to the Queen's younger sister, Princess Margaret, between 1960 and 1978, passed away peacefully aged 86 last week.

Created First Earl of Snowdon in 1961, Antony Armstrong-Jones had two children with Princess Margaret, a daughter, Lady Sarah Chatto and their son, who now becomes the Second Earl.

The Queen, who has been at Sandringham over Christmas, has always been close to her niece and nephew and was said to have been "deeply saddened" by Lord Snowdon's death.

However it is not yet clear if Her Majesty will attend the funeral of her former brother-in-law, which is expected to take place in Wales.
