Rachel Riley blushes as she is made to spell b*****e on Countdown

Warning: this article contains explicit language.

Rachel Riley had an embarrassing stint on Countdown on Tuesday morning, when she was forced to spell out a rude word.

The Oxford Mathematics graduate had to spell the word 'bumhole' on the show, and posed, blushing, next to the blue sign.

Linguistics expert Susie Dent had to beat the previous five-letter word 'bulge' by adding a few extra letters.

The audience was laughing away as Rachel Riley was forced to spell out the explicit word.

Susie Dent was accompanied on Dictionary Corner by Janet Street-Porter, who refused to spell out the word to the host.

She said: "I can't say it!".

Ms. Dent saved the day, saying: "Ok, lets get it over quickly. Bumhole is there".

Host of the Channel 4 daytime show Nick Hewer sighed, raised an eyebrow and said: "Bumhole? It's going to be one of those days is it?"

People on Twitter certainly seemed to enjoy the direction the programme took.

Countdown usually gives us normal words - but sometimes we are presented with a complete clanger. It's surely an encouragement to know that if you graduate with a degree in Maths from Oxford, you too could end up spelling out rude words on daytime television.
