Alvaro Morata celebrates with his teammates after scoring the winning goal

Juventus settled for a 2-1 victory against Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of the Champions League last 16 tie in Turin, to take a slender lead in the return fixture in Germany. Carlos Tevez opened the scoring for the hosts at 13th minute before Dortmund scored an important away goal through Marco Reus in the 18th minute. Alvaro Morata, who set up the opener for Tevez scored the second goal for Juve at 43rd minute, just minutes before half-time.

Both teams started the game positively playing possession game and attacked at the right time, with Dortmund ending the game with 51% possession of the ball. Tevez opened the scoring early on after Morata’s shot was saved by Roman Weidenfeller, which fell to his feet of Tevez, who scored from the four yards.

Dortmund takes lead after Chiellini slip up

Andrea Pirlo was injured in the first half and was replaced with Roberto Pereyra. Five minutes later, Dortmund equalised from Marco Reus after Giorgio Chiellini slipped 40 yards out of the box, to allow Reus a free run on Gianluigi Buffon’s goal.

But the hosts grabbed their second goal of the night when Tevez released Paul Pogba on the left after 43 minutes, and the Frenchmen’s pass was tucked away by Morata from six yards between two defenders. Juventus controlled the game in the second half, but missed two golden opportunities to extend their goal lead over the German side.

First, the tireless Tevez dragged the ball just wide through a crowded penalty area after being found by Claudio Marchisio. Then, Roberto Pereyra beat Weidenfeller from eight yards at an angle with four minutes remaining, but his effort went inches wide of the post.

The last-16 second leg will be played at the Westfalenstadion on Wednesday, March 18.
