Arsenal Transfer Rumours: Arsene Wenger tried to sign Marco Reus on Deadline day

Marco Reus decided to stay at Dortmund

In what comes as a surprising move, Arsenal tried to sign German superstar Marco Reus from Borussia Dortmund in the summer transfer window and waited until the deadline day to put an offer for the German winger.

As reported by afcamden.com, an Arsenal insider, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger moved for the Dortmund superstar on the last day of the transfer window, which was the reason why Lucas Perez’s signing came so late.

Reus has been a mainstay in the Dortmund side since joining the club from Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2012. The German winger has scored 76 goals in 108 appearances for Dortmund – an impressive number for a wide player.

The 27-year old has also played for the German national team, representing his country on 29 occasions and scoring 9 goals.

The German winger’s last two seasons have been disrupted by injury; the recent one ruling him out of the EURO 2016 tournament in France.

Wenger always had quality scorers who could score plenty of goals every season with the likes of Ian Wright, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka and Robin Van Persie donning the Arsenal colours and scoring fluently, something they have sorely lacked the past few seasons.

According to reports, Reus snubbed Wenger's approaches to stay in Germany. The 27-year-old is not the ideal number 9 that the Arsenal fans want, nevertheless, he has an incredible goal-scoring record for the Bundesliga side.

In the summer of 2014, Reus was Wenger's prime target, but the London-based club went on to buy Alexis Sanchez from Barcelona.

Arsenal renewed their interest this summer, in spite of Reus missing out the Euro Cup 2016 through injury. After Jamie Vardy snubbed the Gunners and signed a contract extension with Leicester, Wenger tried to convince the German attacker to make a move to England.

Marco Reus would be the perfect addition to the roster and along with Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil, the trio could forge a formidable attack.

Wenger had the means to sign Reus, with the freedom to spend "over £60m on the right player". It remains to be seen if the Arsenal manager pursues the Dortmund player in the future.

The North London club signed Lucas Perez from La Liga side Deportiva La Coruna on deadline day, along with Valencia’s Shkodran Mustafi.
