India vs West Indies 2016, 1st T20I Stats: MS Dhoni breaks captaincy world record in a record-breaking encounter

Another day and it was another record for MS Dhoni

Evin Lewis scored his maiden T20I century but it was thanks to a Dwayne Bravo masterclass that West Indies managed to beat India by 1 run despite KL Rahul’s century and fifty from Rohit Sharma and wonderful cameo from MS Dhoni in the first T20I in Florida.

After winning the toss and electing to field, India got off to the worst possible start as the West Indian openers put on a century partnership. Johnson Charles scored a fifty and Lewis scored a century as West Indies finished with 245/6.

In response, Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane both departed early but Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul steadied the ship and put on 89 for the third wicket before Rohit was dismissed. MS Dhoni came on and played a wonderful cameo that almost won India the game. But with two needed off the last ball, he was dismissed and WI had a one-run victory to celebrate.

Here are some statistical highlights from the game:

0 – Never before in the history of T20Is have both openers managed 75+ in the same innings. This was the third time that both WI openers have managed a fifty in the same T20I.

0 – KL Rahul’s 46-ball century now means no Indian had scored a faster hundred across any format than the Karnataka-born batsman.

1 – This is the first time a Test, ODI and T20I has started on the same day in the history of cricket. The second Test between South Africa and New Zealand and the second ODI between England and Pakistan are the other international games that started today apart from this T20I.

2 – KL Rahul’s century off 46 ball is now the second-fastest T20I century. Only

5 – Evin Lewis scored five consecutive sixes off Stuart Binny, which was the first time a West Indian batsman had score five consecutive sixes. Only Yuvraj Singh, who has six sixes has hit more consecutive sixes in a T20I.

17 – West Indies equalled the record for most runs in the first over against India. The 17 they managed equalled the score managed by England at Edgbaston in 2014.

19 – West Indies hit at least a boundary in 19 of the 20 overs today. They did the same in the WT20 semi-final vs India.

20 – The 20 balls Johnson Charles took to get to his T20I fifty is the second-fastest for a West Indian. The fastest is Chris Gayle’s 17-ball fifty against South Africa last year. It was also the fastest T20I fifty against India, beating Kumar Sangakkara’s 21-ball effort.

32 – Stuart Binny conceded 32 runs off his only over in this match, which is now the new record for most runs conceded by an Indian bowler in a T20I. The previous record was Suresh Raina’s 26 against South Africa in 2012.

32 – The number of sixes hit in this match, which is the most in any T20.

78 – The score West Indies managed in the powerplay is not only the most that any team has managed against India in the powerplay but also the highest powerplay score at the venue in a T20I. The previous-best powerplay score against India was Australia’s 74 and at the venue it was New Zealand’s 51 against West Indies.

126 – Evin Lewis and Johnson Charles put on the highest opening partnership for WI against India. The previous highest was 80 by Chris Gayle & Shivnarine Chanderpaul at Bridgetown in 2010. This was WI’s fourth century partnership for the opening wicket in T20Is and the first one to not involve Gayle.

132 – WI managed to score 132 in the first 10 overs which is not only their highest score in T20Is in first 10 overs but also the highest score by a team batting first in the first 10 overs beat South Africa’s 131.

325 – No player has played more international games as captain than MS Dhoni. This was his 325th international game across all formats as captain, beating Ricky Ponting’s record of 324.

489 – India and West Indies combined for 489 runs in this T20 match, which is the world record for any T20 clash. The previous-best was the IPL clash between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, which had 469 runs in IPL 2010.
