The Netherlands beat Australia 3-2 in a sensational World Cup Group B match that witnessed stunning goals and non-stop action on Wednesday.

The 2010 runners-up made it two wins out of two following the demolition of defending champions Spain in their opening match.

Substitute Memphis Depay won it for the Dutch after 68 minutes when his low long-range shot somehow escaped the diving Mat Ryan and went just inside a post.

The Netherlands have six points while Australia none from two outings.

Dutch winger Arjen Robben opened the scoring in the 20th minute when he ran from the halfway line before tucking the ball beyond Ryan for his third goal of the tournament.

It was also the 50th goal of this World Cup, in what was the first of the second round of matches.

The Bayern Munich player was an influential figure throughout the game.

Tim Cahill replied immediately, however, crashing a fantastic 20-metre volley into the roof of the net for what will be a strong contender for goal of the tournament.

The 34-year-old, who now plies his trade in American Major League Soccer (MLS) for New York Red Bulls, took his tally for the national team to 34 goals.

The former Everton player had scored Australia's first ever goal in the World Cup finals in 2006, and also the country's highest scorer in the tournament with five goals.

Van Persie scored his third of the tournament

Australia took a shock 2-1 lead with a 54th-minute Mile Jedinak penalty after Oliver Bozanic hammered the ball straight at Daryl Janmaat's arm, but Robin van Persie levelled with a sharply-taken third of the tournament four minutes later.

However, the Dutch captain also received a yellow card and will miss Oranje's final game against Chile on Monday.

While Depay's goal ensured Netherlands a win on the day, they must have a positive result against Chile to top Group B.
