India’s P V Sindhu etched her name in the annals of history by becoming the first Indian shuttler to reach the final at the Olympics when she shocked Japan's Nozomi Okuhara in straight games in the women’s singles semi-finals at the Rio Games on Thursday.

However, she was halted in her stride by world No. 1 Carolina Marin. The Spaniard won  19-21, 21-12, 21-15.

Her march to the final was no walk in the park.

The world No 10 from Hyderabad was pushed to the limit in her campaign-opener by Canada’s Li Michelle.

That was followed by a slightly easier outing against Taiwanese Tai Tzu Ying. She was up against a virtual wall in China's Wang Yihan in the quarter-finals.

She maintained the momentum and shocked Okuhara to make the final.

Rediff.com gives you a statistical lowdown of Sindhu’s breakthrough performance at the Games.
