Oleksiak and Manuel tie for women's 100m freestyle gold

Canada's Penny Oleksiak, 16, and Simone Manuel of the United States dead-heated for the women's 100 metres freestyle gold medal in a time of 52.70 seconds. Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden claimed the bronze.

Phelps wins 200m individual medley gold

Michael Phelps of the United States won the Olympic 200 metres individual medley on Thursday to capture the 22nd gold medal of his career and become the first swimmer to win the same event at four consecutive Games.

Japan's Kosuke Hagino won silver and Wang Shun of China took bronze.

Fencing: Dominant women's team take Romania's first Rio medal

Romania took their first medal of the Rio Olympics on Thursday, as their women's epee team soundly beat China's defending champions to win the country's first-ever team fencing gold.

Estonia just missed its first Olympic fencing medal as Russia won the bronze bout, racking up five medals in the sport over as many days, its best at the Games since at least 2000.

With two of the world's ten best epee fencers coming into Rio, the Romanian women held a lead at the end of every bout and lost just three of 18 match-ups in the semi-final and final.

The champions' biggest scare came against the US team that took bronze in London and fought the Romanians to within a touch in the final bouts of their opening match.

Murphy completes US backstroke double

Ryan Murphy extended a US winning streak and completed a backstroke double on Thursday, adding the Olympic men's 200 metres gold to the 100 title he won earlier in the week.

The US men have now won the event for six successive Olympics dating back to Atlanta in 1996.

Tyler Clary, the gold medallist at London 2012, was unable to defend his title after failing to be selected at the US trials.

Mitch Larkin of Australia won the silver and Russian Evgeny Rylov took the bronze.

Japan's Kaneto wins women's 200m breaststroke

Japan's Rie Kaneto won the Olympic gold medal in the women's 200 metres breaststroke on Thursday, edging out controversial Russian Yulia Efimova who won her second silver of the Games.

Shi Jinglin of China took the bronze.

Biles wins all-around gymnastics gold

Simone Biles won the women's all-around gold medal in convincing fashion on Thursday, cementing her legacy as perhaps the best gymnast in the history of the sport.

This is Biles' second gold medal of the Rio Olympics, having already led Team USA to gold in the team all-around. She is expected to pick up three more golds later on, entering as the heavy favorite in the individual floor, vault, and balance-beam events.

Ma Long wins TT gold in all-China affair

China's Ma Long overwhelmed his teammate and defending champion Zhang Jike with a 4-0 win to seize gold in the men's table tennis singles final on Thursday, with Japan's Jun Mizutani claiming the bronze.

Ma, the world number one, capitalized on Zhang's mistakes and misses to triumph 14-12, 11-5, 11-4 and 11-4 after thrilling the cheering fans with a high-speed game of rapid-fire spins and quick reflexes.

Ma shaped his fingers into a love-heart that he signaled to the spectators as he celebrated his victory. He then held up a Chinese flag with Zhang to reflect the country's continued domination in the game.

Rugby: Rampant Fiji take sevens gold in double first

Fiji produced a breathtaking performance that epitomised the pace, power and skill of their distinctive brand of rugby to become the first men's Olympic sevens champions on Thursday, giving the Pacific island nation its first Games medal.

Facing Britain in the final of the inaugural tournament, the Fijians ran rampant with five tries in the first half before taking their collective foot of the gas a little and adding only two more after the break to seal a 43-7 victory.

Skipper Osea Kolinisau, Jerry Tuwai, Jasa Veremalua, Leone Nakarawa, Vatemo Ravouvou, Josua Tuisova and Viliame Mata all scored tries as Fiji collected its first Olympic title at its 14th Games.

Czech Republic's Krpalek wins judo men's 100kg gold

Lukas Krpalek, the Czech Republic's flag bearer, beat Azerbaijan's Elmar Gasimov to win the gold medal in the judo men's 100kg event. Ryunosuke Haga of Japan and Cyrille Maret of France won the bronze medals.

Judoka Harrison revels in second gold

American Kayla Harrison defeated France's Audrey Tcheumeo to become the first judoka to win two gold medals in the women's -78kg category, creating a legacy as one of the sport's all-time greats.

"I think it's really hard to repeat as an Olympic champion, I think it's one of the hardest things you can do," Harrison told reporters in Rio de Janeiro.

Poles snatch win in women's double sculls final

Poland's Magdalena Fularczyk-Kozlowska and Natalia Madaj edged past Britain's Katherine Grainger and Victoria Thornley in the final meters of the race to snatch the gold medal in the women's double sculls at the Olympic rowing regatta on Thursday.

The nail-biter saw the two boats neck-and-neck for much of the race. Britain led Poland by just .64 seconds at the halfway mark and appeared poised to win.

But the gritty Poles never gave up and found an extra burst of power with the finishing line in sight. They clocked 7 minutes 40.10 seconds, 0.95 ahead of Grainger and Thornley.

Sinkovic brothers win rowing Gold for Croatia

Croatian brothers Martin and Valent Sinkovic secured a gold medal in the men's double sculls final in the Olympic rowing regatta on Thursday, in a tough duel that saw them battling Lithuania's boat neck-and-neck for much of the race.

After taking an early lead and holding Lithuania's Mindaugas Griskonis and Saulius Ritter to the second-place spot through the 1000-meter mark, Croatia slipped back into second place in the third-quarter.

Lithuanian fans in the stands at Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon cheered wildly as the two boats battled for gold through the final half of the race.

Ultimately, Croatia won in a time of 6:50.28, Lithuania claimed silver in 6:51.39 and Norway took bronze.

Germany's Engleder wins gold in 50m rifle three position

Barbara Engleder of Germany won her first medal in four Olympic Games as she clinched gold in the women's 50 metre rifle three position. Zhang Binbin of China won silver, while compatriot Du Li won the bronze.

Slovakian cousins win men c-2 gold

Slovakian cousins Ladislav Skantar and Peter Skantar took gold in the men's canoe double C-2 in Deodoro's Whitewater Arena. Britain's Richard Hounslow and David Florence won silver, while Gauthier Klauss and Matthieu Peche of France took bronze.

South Korea's Chang takes gold in Archery

South Korea's Chang Hye-Jin took the women's individual archery gold medal with a 6-2 win over Lisa Unruh of Germany. South Korea's Ki Bo-Bae, the individual winner at the 2012 London Games, beat Mexico's Alejandra Valencia for the bronze.

Britain win gold in men's team sprint

Britain won the team sprint gold for the third consecutive Olympics after defeating New Zealand in the final on Thursday.

Anchor man Callum Skinner crossed the line 0.102 seconds in front as Britain set a new Olympic record time of 42.440 seconds.

France beat Australia to win the bronze medal
