But after Indira Gandhi lost the 1977 election, the new Janata Party government cleared the film and had it premiered on State-run Doordarshan. It was Suchitra Sen’s last Hindi film, as she retired from films altogether in 1978.

Director Prakash Jha rubbished this allegation, saying his only inspiration was Mahabharata. Ultimately, the film was granted a U/A certificate after it removed some scenes and references which suggested that women have to compromise to get ahead in politics. Some intimate scenes and excessive violence were also cut.
