India's 10 most influential, powerful brands

A survey on India’s top brands conducted by marketing and brand consultancy Millward Brown in conjunction with WPP reveals that service sectors like banking, telecom and insurance are in the top league.

Seven of the top 10 brands, and 30 per cent of the top 50 brands came from the services sector.  

One of India's well-known brand "Tata" is, however, missing in the list as the holding company Tata Sons is not listed, though Tata Motors made it to the list.  

Here’s the list of top ten brands in India  

HDFC Bank

Rank: 1

Brand value: $9.4 billion  

HDFC Bank has a network of over 3,400 branches and 11,250 ATMs in more than 2,100 cities.

It is popular with its 28 million customers for launching mobile apps designed to make banking easier, and running literacy, education and skills training programmes in rural areas.

Brand value: $8.2 billion

Airtel has operations in 20 countries across Asia and Africa has over 200 million mobile subscriber in India and has consolidated its leadership in India, both in terms of customers and revenues.

The company ranks as the fourth largest mobile operator in the world in terms of subscribers, says the company website.

State Bank of India

Rank: 3

Brand value: $6.8 billion 

With assets worth around $400 billion, State Bank of India (SBI) is the largest public bank in India with a quarter of market share in deposits.

It has over 15,000 branches across the country and approximately 200 branches globally.  

Being a regional behemoth does not mean SBI is not confronted with sector issues like rising bad loans.  

The bank’s chairman Arundhati Bhattacharya has taken various initiatives to strengthen the bank’s balance sheet by monetising non-core assets and diversifying into various banking related businesses.

Brand value: $3.5 billion  

ICICI Bank has grand plans to open branches in Australia, South Africa and Mauritius along with strengthening position in India.
