After spending two seasons with the team as player, Australia's two-time World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting will take over as head coach of Mumbai Indians for the eighth season of the Indian Premier League.

He will replace John Wright, who was the team's coach for Season 6 and 7.

The New Zealander will continue to work with the Mumbai Indians management in evaluating and establishing a youth development programme for the franchise.

A highly successful captain in international cricket, Ponting was among the most celebrated cricketers during his time. He was associated with Mumbai Indians as captain and player in IPL 6.

Meanwhile, Anil Kumble has been elevated to the owners’ group and will oversee the implementation of the 'Vision for Reliance Sports' that currently has interests across multiple sports including football, basketball and cricket.

The former India captain said: "We are delighted to have Ricky back with us and look forward to his contribution based on his experience and expertise.

"John Wright will continue his association with Mumbai Indians and look after talent scouting and youth development, which is one of the areas that we would like to build a stronger base in years to come."
