Brilliant half centuries from skipper Virat Kohli and opener Abhinav Mukund put India in a commanding position in the opening Test of the three-match series against Sri Lanka on Friday.

309 Lead taken by India -- the biggest they have ever achieved in a Test in Sri Lanka. Incidentally, the previous best was 192 -- also at Galle in 2015. India went on to lose that match!

1 Number of instances when an Indian captain had a bigger first innings lead without enforcing the follow-on. Rahul Dravid opted to bat first against England at the Oval in 2007 despite a lead of 319.

5 Number of times Virat Kohli has not enforced the follow-on in Test matches. All other Indian captains have a combined tally of four such instances!

92* Dilruwan Perera’s innings -- the highest for a Sri Lankan number 7 in his maiden innings vs India. Ruwan Kalpage had made 63 at Bangalore in 1993-94.

17 Number of innings Virat Kohli needed to complete his 1000 runs as captain in Tests outside India -- fewest by any Indian. Sachin Tendulkar had taken 19 innings to accomplish this feat.

1 Number of instances of 300 runs being scored on each of the first three days in first 131 Tests in Sri Lanka. This has happened now in two consecutive Tests -- in Sri Lanka-Zimbabwe Test at Colombo (RPS) and in this Test.

47.03 Rangana Herath’s bowling average against India. Against all other opponents he average 26.66

10 Number of wickets taken by Sri Lankan pacers in this match (six by Nuwan Pradeep and four by Lahiru Kumara) -- the joint-most for the hosts in a Test at Galle, along with the match against Pakistan in 2009, when the trio of Nuwan Kulasekara, Thilan Thusara and Angelo Mathews had taken 10 wickets in the match.
