Thiruvananthapuram, February 17 : Minister for cooperation in the CPI(M)-led LDF government Kadakampally Surendran on Friday came to the rescue of a couple severely injured in a road accident near Chacka bypass.

The minister, who was on his way home in his official vehicle after attending a function at Kazhakoottam, asked his driver to stop the vehicle when he noticed people thronging one side of the road holding up traffic.

As he approached the crowd, he saw a young couple lying on the road, injured and profusely bleeding.

On learning that the couple had been lying on the road for some time with no one coming forward to help them, the minister and his driver helped them into the back seat of the minister’s official vehicle and drove them to a nearby hospital.

According to a report in CPI(M) mouthpiece Deshabhimani, the minister berated those in the crowd who whipped out their cellphones to take pictures of the bleeding couple as they were being helped into the car and chided them for standing by idly instead of helping the injured.

The young couple, who was travelling on a two-wheeler, was reportedly knocked down by a car.

The incident again sheds light on the public’s apathy towards accident victims.

Recently, a CCTV footage showing a man falling off a lodge in Kochi and passers-by standing idly by without bothering to take the profusely bleeding man to hospital had gone viral and kicked up a huge debate.
