Chandigarh, Feb 8 : A man was held in Kapurthala town on charge of throwing petrol on a 16-year-old girl relative, who suffered burns due to resultant fire in the kitchen of her house, police said.

Komal Preet, a resident of Thakur Nagar locality in Kapurthala which is around 175 km from here, suffered burns on her face and other body parts due to fire as petrol caught fire from a stove she was preparing tea on in the kitchen. She was rushed to a nearby hospital.

Accused Hardeep Singh, 35, was arrested.

Initially, the family thought Hardeep had thrown acid on her but doctors found that she suffered burn injuries after petrol thrown on her caught fire.

Police said Hardeep was upset as the teenager's mother had taken Rs 7 lakh as loan from him but did not return it. Police said he wanted to attack the woman, Manpreet Kaur, but she escaped.
