Bhubaneswar, Jan 16 : Odisha Director General of Police (DGP) R.P. Sharma on Tuesday issued an advisory to the police, educational institutions and parents to ensure that colleges are free of crime.

The move comes after instances of students indulging in various criminal activities came to notice.

There has been an increasing trend of criminal activities due to advancement of technology within the cyberspace like stalking, hacking, sextortion and the like, said the DGP.

In order to check such nefarious habits among young students, Sharma instructed all Superintendents of Police in the state, including DCPs of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, to take special measures on the issue.

The magnitude of such crimes among students has been increasing manifold which has been a major concern for college authorities and parents in particular and police in general, said Sharma.

He asked police for regular patrolling in and around college premises by deploying PCR Vans.

The DGP also called for action to stop the sale of drugs, tobacco and contraband products in shops near and around educational institutions.

Police should deploy personnel in civilian clothing to detect outsiders indulging in anti-social activities and conduct raids to nab cat-callers, he added.

He said police should remain in regular touch with college authorities and students to impart orientation programme on crime-related issues.

In the advisory, he also urged the educational institutions to take the police into confidence and keep them in the loop in all matters related to crime and law and order.

The college authorities should install best quality CCTV cameras with extensive coverage and storage system within the college premises, hostels, canteens and at other vulnerable points.

The advisory asked parents to be vigilant about their electronic gadgets and said they should stop the students from visiting hotels, pubs, bars and encourage them to give up the habit of imbibing tobacco products.
