Zurich, Dec 8 : Peru captain Paolo Guerrero was on Friday banned by world football's governing body FIFA for one year as a result of a positive test for cocaine, forcing the 33-year-old to miss the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

Guerrero tested positive for "cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine" after a World Cup qualifying game in Argentina on October 5, reports Xinhua news agency.

The suspension will start from November 3.

The Peru forward, who plays for Brazilian club Flamengo, can appeal to FIFA, and later at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
